What a day looks like

Circle time, letters, colors and friends. The support is built into the room, so the day still looks like preschool.

  1. Arrival and settling in

A calm start, with sensory supports from the moment a child walks in.

  2. Connection first

Adults follow the child's lead in play, then build early learning on top of that connection.

  3. Play-based learning

Letters, colors, numbers and early skills, taught through play rather than at a table.

  4. Small-group play

A few children at a time, with an adult close by so each child gets a turn and the support to take it.

  5. Sensory supports throughout

Movement, quiet spaces and tools that help a child settle are part of the whole day, not a separate slot.

  6. Swimming

The pool is part of the classroom. An affiliated program with Five Star Swim School in Oakland supports regulation, body awareness, confidence and, not least, joy.

  7. Structured transitions

Clear, predictable handoffs between activities and at pickup.

Who Harbor Academy is built for

Families come to us when a big classroom is not working. Choosing a smaller room is not admitting something is wrong. It is choosing the room where a child can do well.

A child who needs a smaller room

Big classrooms move fast and get loud. Some children do better with fewer people, a slower pace and an adult close by.

With or without a diagnosis

No diagnosis is needed to enroll. Some families come with one, many do not, and some are not looking for one. Harbor Academy is preschool either way.

A parent who wants preschool, not a clinic

Built by an occupational therapist, run like a preschool.

Founder and Clinical Director. Courtney founded Harbor Academy and designed the classroom around how young children regulate, connect and learn. She works alongside Sarah Hewitt, who leads center operations and curriculum.

Private pay, so there is
nothing to wait on.

Harbor Academy is a private pay educational program. Tuition does not depend on insurance coverage, there is no approval to wait on, and a child can usually start quickly.

Two options: the core preschool day, or the core day with extended hours for families who need a longer one. We go through tuition with you on your visit.

Questions parents ask first

Does my child need a diagnosis?

No. Harbor Academy does not require a diagnosis. Families come with one, without one, and some are not looking for one.

Is this instead of preschool?

Harbor Academy is preschool. A small, play-based classroom for ages 3 to 6, with more support built into the room.

Do you take insurance?

Harbor Academy is private pay, so tuition does not depend on insurance coverage. Because there is no approval to wait on, a child can usually start quickly. We go through tuition with you on your visit.

What are the hours?

There is a core preschool day, and an extended hours option for families who need a longer one. We go through the schedule with you on your visit.

Why is it this expensive?

A small classroom, therapeutic staff and a room built for this. It is a different cost structure from a standard preschool.

How is this different from the DIR/Floortime Day Program?

The day program is for children ages 3 to 6 with an autism diagnosis. It is a therapeutic day, billed through out-of-network benefits or Medicaid. Harbor Academy is preschool, private pay, and no diagnosis is needed.

What if my child also needs therapy?

Individual therapies, including occupational, feeding and aquatic therapy, are offered at the same center for ages birth to 21 and are billed separately as out-of-network services.
